From West to East to study cardboard and paper manufacturing!

Corex is committed to supporting its employees’ professional skills and well-being at work. In May 2023, employees from Corex Finland’s Pori paperboard mill participated in training on paperboard and paper manufacturing in Lappeenranta. The training was provided by POHTO (Northern Finland Industrial College), whose courses are usually held in Oulu. The location of the course offered the opportunity to combine the training with a visit to Corex Finland’s Imatra tube mill. Eight employees from various departments at the Pori paperboard mill participated in the training.

The course location provided an opportunity to combine the visit to Corex Finland’s Imatra tube factory with the course.

The goal of the training was to help employees understand the paperboard and paper manufacturing process as a whole. Through the training, our employees gained new knowledge and a good refresher on the impact that raw materials and their selection have on various aspects of the paperboard machine, as well as on measurements and adjustments. In addition, the training provided information on how different chemicals function in paperboard manufacturing and how combining different chemicals yields the best end product.

– There was a lot of discussion about consistency measurements as well as flow and pressure measurements. About refining, how it affects the fiber, and how it behaves after refining.

One of the purposes of the training sessions is to spark discussion on how we could improve our own operations, and one idea that came up was for the chemical suppliers at the Pori paperboard mill to organize their own training on the chemicals we use.

- Optimizing the use of chemicals to ensure that the dosage is neither too high nor too low, in terms of both cost and quality.

"A pleasant and interesting trip. The atmosphere was relaxed, and it was nice to meet old and new coworkers and chat with them during breaks."

The training was held at Holiday Club Lappeenranta. In addition to the training, employees went on a company tour to learn about operations at Stora Enso’s Kaukopää mill and Corex’s Imatra tube mill.

Employees had the opportunity to discuss with operators and production supervisors at the Imatra tube mill how various factors affect the success of the process between the paperboard mill and the tube mill.

- The training would be beneficial in the future for shift supervisors and especially for new machine operators and those in machine operator training.

- A good refresher for experienced machine operators and a solid package of basics for newer ones.

- A pleasant and interesting trip. The atmosphere was relaxed; it was nice to meet old and new coworkers and chat with them during their work breaks.

- Everything went really well, and the collaboration was rewarding. In return, employees from the Imatra coreboard mill will visit the Pori paperboard mill later this year.

Based on the comments, it can be concluded that the participants considered the training trip a successful and enjoyable experience.
