"You learn more in a factory than sitting in an office"

Oskari Auranen (25), electrical maintenance foreman at Corex Finland's cardboard factory in Pori

"I started summer work at the Pori cardboard factory in May. I work as a summer vacation substitute for the maintenance foreman of the electrical side of the factory. I work at the factory for four months, from May to the end of August, then I go back to school.

I am currently studying to become an electrical automation engineer and I have two years of studies behind me. I graduated as an electrician from vocational school in 2017 and worked as an electrician for a few years until I returned to school in 2021 to complete engineering studies.

I was looking for an internship related to my studies in early 2023 when I noticed Corex Finland's summer job advertisement on the Duunitori.fi website. The cardboard factory in Pori and the jobs it offers seemed interesting, so I sent them an application. I made it to the job interview and got the position. Corex Finland was not a company I was familiar with before, although I did know that there was a cardboard factory in Pori.

Often similar days, but sometimes there are surprises ahead

I only do the day shift at the factory and my working day usually starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.

I start my working day by checking the working time tracking system to see which of the on-duty installers are at the workplace, and I update any deviations in the personnel calendar.

Next, I go through the factory's production report, which comes once a day, from which I can see if there have been any maintenance problems at the factory and where the electricians should be sent first. Every day, we also have a common morning meeting where current issues are discussed.

My work also includes day-to-day management and resource management, as well as monitoring maintenance notifications in the enterprise resource planning system. The pattern of my working days repeats pretty much the same, but of course sometimes something surprising or acute happens that requires attention. If, for example, the production of the entire factory stops and the cardboard machine is stopped, the related issues are taken care of immediately.

At work, you learn to understand the operations of the factory

The best thing about my job is its versatility and daily changing events. I myself try to be on the factory side as much as possible every day. As a student, it helps to understand the operations of the entire factory better than just sitting in the office.

There are typically five electricians working at the factory, and I try to be responsible for managing them. Installers have a wide range of skills. They are experienced professionals with long experience in the operation of the facility. They manage well even in difficult situations.

With two months of experience, I can say that Corex Finland has been a good summer job for an engineering student. The Pori cardboard factory has versatile automation systems and different voltage distribution systems. From the point of view of learning, it is a good thing when you can get to know different systems on a wide scale, which is not possible everywhere.

It also feels that employees are valued and rewarded at Corex. The company has good employee benefits, such as ePassi, the factory's gym and sauna. Development suggestions and reaching goals are also rewarded. The supervisors are always there to support you if needed, and you can get help if you need it."
